beaucolburn.com: Flip off: Ultra vs. Mino HD

  • Scott Genevish · 10 months ago
I actually came to your site by searching for what people were saying about the HD's FOV. It's a very noticeable problem. I'm constantly cutting off peoples heads on videos. I suppose I'll get used to it at some point and compensate, but I hope they fix it in future versions...

I found your site when I googled ...... had just purchased a Vado HD and in the process of returning it (downloading videos was a pain ...). Now i was comparing which way to go with a Flip. Had used a friends Flip HD, but was just not sure that the $$ was worth it. thanks for guiding my decision!

cool, glad to hear that it helped.

Thanks for your review. I also was just comparing the two because I use these cameras with my journalism students.
One question, though, did you notice a difference in the sound quality?
I've found with the ULTRA you have to be close to a subject to get the best sound for an interview. So with the Mino HD you would have to step back more to get the wider-angle and would thereby lose some sound quality by stepping back.
Have you found this to be the case?

looks like they just released an ultra HD:

I was just about ready to buy the miro HD, but this looks like the way to go. Removable rechargeable battery with ability to use AAs is a nice new feature.

Thanks for your comparison. I just noticed that there's now an Ultra HD, too. Is there any reason you can imagine that you would choose the mino HD over that? I can't, but it's hard to know without trying them personally.
Also, have you heard anything about image stabilization? Apparently it's an issue and not included in any of their products.
    thanks
  • beaucolburn · 7 months ago
@joel. Well some people want the smallest possible. It definitely makes a difference as far as fitting in a pocket or whatnot. As for stabilization, the only thing I've tried (with pretty good results) is using the Mino with iMovie (http://beaucolburn.com/post/73597921/flippingsm...).

Really? Is the Ultra HD that much bulkier?
I like small small - it does come in handy when you're on a trip and already carrying a camera and a phone.... but I'm leaning to the Ultra HD - the bigger screen would seem to make it easier to shoot.

Thanks for tip on iMovie. I'll check it out. I'm experienced in After Effects and there are sophisticated fixes in there, but it would be nice not to have to do anything in post.

thank you very much for doing the research. i reread the article because you said you returned the ultra but i see it wasn't hd. i have the flip mino video but not hd. i do like the white balance with the ultra and i really didn't want to do the batteries. however, aren't we looking for the best video so the batteries are not such a big deal. thanks again for the advice.
also last night i showed my friend our trip to pebble beach and he just was given the flip hd and says his video is lot sharper. i guess i will have to repeat pebble beach........sure. scott

Amazing comparison, I can hardly wait til your review with the new UltaHD, because I got the one from Amazon 30 min. which was too short and now they have 120 mins Ultra HD and noticed that I can't get the customized photo on it, like the Mino. But the Mino is smaller yet I got use to the great size of Ultra. Should I go and get the 120m. after only 1.5 months of the 30 mins. one? Of course, then I see the Mino is there too.

This was very very helpful...thanks alot for this I wasn't quite sure of the differences in the two now i'm quite sure and the Ultra shoots alot better :)

Hi! I have a question. I want to get a Flip camcorder for posting youtube videos of myself singing. In my city I only have the Flip Ultra and the Flip Mino HD. The most important feature I want is to have good sound. Here is a video of a girl using a Flip Mino (not HD): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cI0ubhhoCQ&feat...

As you can see she does have notes that are high enough and the mic on the camcorder doesn't screw up which is a big bonus. But I don't know which one of the two to buy. Unless there is no difference in the sound I want to have the best picture.

Thanks for the insight and the side by side evaluation. I've been struggling with what to go with. This truly helped with some of my decision making!! Tested the Flip Ultra HD yet?

Thank you very much for this article. I am about to buy my first FLIP on Amazon. I need one for my interviews on my new website and I've been going crazy between the two...I decided to go with the FLIP HD.

Please write your review when you get that one!

hey now they have a flip ultra HD and I'm considering getting it
  • adamkillam · 4 months ago
Perfect. Thanks for the review: exactly what I needed to make a decision. Strange that they don't have a comparison like this on their own website.

I just got the Flip Ultra HD today. I picked it without really paying much attention to the Mino version... I noticed that the Ultra shoots 4:3 so does that mean the Flip Ultra HD shoots 16:9?

Thank you a lot for your article.
I wasn't sure which Flip to buy. After I've read your article I'm sure I want Ultra and now there is Flip UltraHD out so I guess this will be my pick.

Thank you again for your review, I'll buy at Amazon via one of your links ;)

You love Flip as much as I do, apparently. And here we are, only a year later, and your wish has been granted - this year there's a Flip Ultra HD. AWESOME! :)

    Thanks for the great article.
